How to Specify Rubber Hardness

State the hardness scale, target, tolerance and test conditions.

State the scale

Shore A, Shore D and Asker C are different measurements. Do not compare or convert them as if they were the same property.

Hardness is one input

Hardness alone does not define stiffness in an assembled part, sealing force, vibration isolation or load capacity. Geometry and compound behavior also matter.

Define the requirement

Include the target and permitted variation, test method, sample thickness and conditioning where required. Ask for a material review if the existing specification is incomplete.

Read source data carefully

A typical material data-sheet value is not automatically a guaranteed tolerance for a molded finished part. Cure and post-cure conditions affect the comparison.
